Altha finished runner up at the 2008 Big Bend Weightlifting Meet in Tallahassee this past Wednesday. Thirteen teams competed in the event with Wakulla winning the team title with 38 points. The wildcats came in second with 36 points. Other teams competing at the meet were: Blountstown, Chiles, East Gadsen, Florida High, Godby, Leon, Liberty County, Lincoln, Madison County, Rickards, Taylor County, Wewa and Wakulla. Altha had three individual champions at the meet. In the 139 pound weight class, Gary Chew finished with a 520 pound total. Gary went for the state record on his third clean and jerk with an attempt of 290 pounds. Chew was able to clean the weight, but just missed the jerk. Tony Golden also won in the 154 pound weight class. Tony had a 275 pound bench press and a 245 pound clean and jerk. Junior Terry Stinson won the 169 pound weight class with a 275 pound bench press and a 255 pound clean and jerk. Ethan Ellis, Remington Walker, Josh Mcintosh, Noah Byler, and John Tedesco also scored points in the meet. The boys will now get a week off from competition, before suiting back up for the first qualifying meet to be held on Thursday, March 20th. This week off will help the boys fine tune some technique issues and help a couple of them work on getting their bodyweight where it needs to be. |
