| The Altha Boys Weightlifting team opened up the 2008 season with a win over Port St. Joe and Liberty County. The final score at the meet was Altha 53, Port St. Joe 28 and Liberty County 27. The wildcats won 8 out of 10 weight classes at the meet. Weight class winners were: Ethan Ellis, Cody Sewell, Gary Chew, Josh McIntosh, Tony Golden, Terry Stinson, Noah Byler, and Andrew Coker. This years' team has several boys who will have a chance to make some noise at the state qualifiers and at the state final. Returning medalists from a year ago, Tony Golden and Gary Chew, are poised to go after more medals this year. In the opening meet of the year, Gary Chew had a successful clean and jerk of 275 pounds. Gary is in the 139 pound weight class. The state record in the 139 pound weight class is 285 pounds. Tony Golden has made big gains over the off-season, especially in the bench press. Golden finished sixth at state last year, and will look to improve that placing this year. Senior Josh McIntosh has made huge gains over the off season and will also have a shot at qualifying for state in the 154 pound weight class. Junior Terry Stinson and Senior John Tedesco have also vastly improved over the off season and should both enjoy success this year. Stinson had the highest total on the team in the opening season win. Tedesco has cleaned 300 in training. Senior Remington Walker will look to make his first year on the weightlifting team memorable, as he works on making the 129 pound weight class. Walker had a 255 pound bench press in his first meet.
Overall, this years' team is mostly freshman and sophomores with a few seniors and one junior. It will be hard to accomplish the runner-up feat of last year, but this team should do big things this year. Barring no injuries, this team has a few boys who will have a chance to bring home some hardware from state. Stay tuned as the season unfolds! |
